Gatwick Airport was initially a small flying club before a proposal was put forward to make it an alternative to Heathrow Airport in 1952. The Government approved and the airport was closed in 1956 to allow the development to begin. With almost three years of construction, Gatwick was officially re-opened by Her Majesty, The Queen in 1958. Subsequently, Gatwick endured further improvements and in 1994 the new North Terminal International Departure Lounge was opened. The first phase of the South Terminal variant was also opened at a combined cost of £30 million.

With extensive additions and alterations to both the North and South Terminals in 2000 and 2001, passengers were greeted with an increased seating capacity, a wider selection of catering facilities and shops at a cost of £64.5 million.
